Rest In Peace Toni Morrison. Thank you. . . . . #literarygiants #tonimorrison #jazz #modernclassic
Currently reading The Salt Eaters by Toni Cade Bambara and the writing is beautiful. I still don’t have a grasp on what is happening but the opening is brillant and this may be my next five star read. Swipe for an extract! . . . . . . . #currentlyreading #bookstagram #readingrush #bookofinstagram #bookworm #booktube #thesalteaters #tonicadebambara #vintagecontemporaries
I decided to stop into the library on stonewall day and take a picture of the #pride table. I have been in the library one other time since my other post, but I did notice that they add and change the types of books that were offered. I was happy to see the wide selection. Happy Stonewall Day, Folks. Let’s not forget that the right we have as queer folks were gotten to us by the work of black and latinx trans women (Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera). We still have a lot of of work to do since our community does not have equal rights. 11 transwomen have died in 2019 and this is unacceptable. Happy Pride! . . . . . . . #library #librarylife #support #allies #queerlit #queerreads #queerbooks #bookish #bookstagram #books #book #booksofinstagram #booktube
I’ve been talking a small break from other books this week because Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey is due at the library and I’ve been really looking forward to reading it. I first read Gailey’s River of Teeth and I had found it really intriguing, but I wished that it had been longer. So you can imagine my excitement to see Gailey try out a longer format text. Before I went into this I read that this was very much a genre bender and was somewhat of The Magicians meets Tana French. The comparison isn’t far off. We open the novel with Ivy Gamble, a PI, returning to her office when she gets mugged. As she tries to recover from her injury, she realizes that someone is in her office. Ivy knows she locked the door and isn’t surprised when she realizes that a mage has come to her office to ask her help with investigating a murder. Ivy doesn’t usually investigate murder she, and on top of that, the murder occurred on the campus of the magical boarding school (Osthorne Academy for Young Mages) where her sister teaches. Ivy and her sister Tabitha have been estranged since their mother died and since Tabitha went off to magical boarding school. As Ivy delves into what happened to Sylvia (the murdered faculty member), we get a feel for the power dynamics on the campus and for the sisterly bond between Ivy and Tabitha. Gailey plays with tropes in the fantasy genre all while reminding you of course there is going to be graffiti and the usual high school antics. Yes, the students happen to have magic, but they are children first and foremost. Also, there happens to be queer folks in the story line and it’s not othered in any way. I’m nearly have way done and I’m loving it. Go figure this happens when I’ve told myself I need to stop acquiring books for a couple months due to a recent buying spree. Well, the wait will make it worth it, I suppose. . . . . . . . . . #bookphotography #librarylife #booklover #queerreads #bookish #bookstagram #book #fantasy #read #reader #mystery #magicforliars #sarahgailey #torbooks #genrebender #bookworm #booksofinstagram
Last week I finished the much beloved Normal People by Sally Rooney. Normal People is an in depth study of the relationship between our two protagonists, Connell and Marianne. Their relationship is complicated from the start with Marianne’s privilege impacting Connell’s ability/willingness to communicate and from Marianne’s inability to state that which she wants/needs ( thanks to past familial trauma). Lorraine, Connell’s mother, works as a house keeper for Marianne’s family and the pair first begin to interact when Connell comes to pick her up. The novel is a study of their ongoing friendship and relationship. Through their relationship Rooney delves into what can happen to two people who fail to communicate openly. It can be frustrating to read at times because the reader can see how certain ruptures could have been prevented, but it does feel real and true to life. Connell is able to peer into the affairs of the elite through his relationship with Marianne and his perspective/how being in this world impacts him was interesting. I like how Rooney was able to flip the power dynamics between the characters while still maintaining this constant feeling of life in flux and the unreliability of an emotion that seems undeniable. There are trigger warnings for physical and mental abuse as well as an inaccurate description of BDSM (I believe this is because Marianne convinces herself that a partner is sadist when he is in actually just an abuser). ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. . . . . . . #bookish #bookphotography #booklover #librarylife #bookstagram #reader #read #fiction #booktube #normalpeople #sallyrooney #hogarthpress
It’s my six year anniversary(yes folks, I was confused yesterday when I said seven 😅) and she was kind enough to get me a book that I was eyeing yesterday @countrybookshelf . I had started I Wish You All the Best by Mason Deaver on audio and I really enjoyed the first part. I am happily going to restart it in print soon. Hooray hikes, coffee, and books with my lovely lady. Six year of merry making and amusing folks with our antics. . . . . . . . . #bookphotography #booklover #queerbooks #queerreads #read #reader #bookstagram #booktube #book #booktube #independentbookshop #indiebookstores #nonbinaryrepresentation #youngadult #ya #bookish #booksofinstagram #iwishyouallthebest #masondeaver #fiction
